Your website is going to get traffic from several different sources. Readers may find links that you’ve spread across the Internet, and click to explore. Maybe they find your link off Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn and read your materials. There’s definitely something to be said about a reader who finds your work based on recommendation.

Or, they may come directly, meaning they knew your web address and typed it in.

The most dedicated traffic that you have, however, will come from search, and that’s why it still matters. People who search Google for your industry and locate your website are motivated. These are the people with buying on their mind.

That’s why it’s important to do everything you can to help them find you. Some businesses have become extremely adept at search, with two or three results popping on page one for their industry search terms. This only increases their efficiency.

If you’re working on ranking your website higher in Google, Yahoo and Bing, make sure to:

  • Finish your on site optimization – This includes filling out all of your meta tags on each page, and making sure that there’s quality content there, with a strong explanation of your products and services. Don’t miss opportunities to score points with your customers, or the search engines.
  • Fill out a Google Places page – These are especially good for businesses with a physical location. They can also pop up as an alternative listing for your business, allowing you attain some of that domination we were talking about.
  • Provide Links – Links are the breadcrumbs that you leave across the Internet for people to find your site. This is one of the great benefits to social. It’s also why directories matter. You don’t want to buy your links, or try anything that could be considered “scamming” the search engines. Instead, focus on trying to please them.
  • Keep Producing Content – Each blog that you write becomes an indexed page in Google. If you take advantage of all the categories, tags and SEO opportunities your platform provides, you never know where your blogs may resurface. That’s a good thing.
Just remember to keep at it. There’s more content being produced on a daily basis, than you could ever imagine. But if you do this right, quality search traffic will find quality content.
